Police warn Hoosiers crossing state lines for weed following Ohio's legalization
As another bordering state approves recreational marijuana, police remind Hoosiers it's still illegal in Indiana
An ISP spokesperson said troopers frequently hear from drivers that they're going to Ohio to buy marijuana.
As Ohio joins several other states in legalizing recreational marijuana, Indiana State Police are warning Hoosiers that it's still illegal to possess or use marijuana in Indiana, even if it was purchased legally in Ohio.
Indiana State Police Sgt. Glen Fifield said troopers have already received reports of drivers who have been pulled over with marijuana in their vehicles and who have said they were going to Ohio to buy it.
"We're asking Hoosiers to be aware of the laws in their state and to not put themselves in a position where they could be arrested," Fifield said. "If you're going to Ohio to buy marijuana, be prepared to face the consequences."
The consequences for possessing marijuana in Indiana vary depending on the amount of marijuana involved, Fifield said. For possession of less than 30 grams of marijuana, the penalty is a misdemeanor punishable by up to one year in jail and a fine of up to $5,000.
For possession of more than 30 grams but less than 2.5 ounces of marijuana, the penalty is a felony punishable by up to three years in prison and a fine of up to $10,000. For possession of more than 2.5 ounces of marijuana, the penalty is a felony punishable by up to four years in prison and a fine of up to $10,000.
Fifield said troopers will be on the lookout for drivers who are crossing the state line to buy marijuana, and they will not hesitate to arrest anyone who is found to be in possession of marijuana.
