Aurora Borealis Wows Seattle
Spectacular Light Show Over Washington
May 11, 2024
Seattle-area stargazers got a spectacular view of the aurora borealis Friday night as a strong solar storm hit. The Northern Lights were visible in Seattle and across much of the United States, with reports of sightings as far south as Atlanta. The aurora was caused by a severe geomagnetic storm that sent charged particles from the sun into Earth's atmosphere. These particles interact with atoms and molecules in the atmosphere, causing them to emit light.
The aurora borealis is a natural light display in the sky, primarily visible at high latitude regions (around the Arctic and Antarctic). It is caused by the interaction of charged particles from the solar wind with the Earth's atmosphere.
The aurora is most commonly seen in the winter months, when the nights are longer and the sky is darker. However, it can be seen at any time of year, if the solar activity is strong enough.
The aurora borealis is a beautiful and awe-inspiring sight. It is a reminder of the power of nature and the beauty of the universe.
