North Korea Criticizes South Korea's 'Irresponsible' Comments on Military Cooperation
Pyongyang Slams Seoul's Remarks on Possible Joint Drills With U.S.
North Korea has strongly criticized South Korea's recent comments on possible joint military drills with the United States, calling them "irresponsible" and "provocative."
In a statement released by the North Korean Foreign Ministry, Pyongyang accused Seoul of "escalating tensions on the Korean Peninsula" by discussing military exercises with Washington.
The statement said that North Korea "will not tolerate any attempt to undermine its sovereignty and security" and warned of "grave consequences" if the joint drills go ahead.
South Korea has not yet confirmed whether it plans to conduct joint military exercises with the U.S., but the possibility has been raised by some officials in Seoul.
The U.S. and South Korea have regularly conducted joint military exercises in the past, but North Korea has always condemned them as a threat to its security.
Tensions between the two Koreas have been high in recent months, with North Korea conducting a series of missile tests and South Korea responding with its own military drills.
The latest comments from North Korea come just days after South Korean President Yoon Suk-yeol said that he was open to discussing joint military exercises with the U.S. during his upcoming visit to Washington.
Yoon's comments were met with criticism from North Korea, which accused him of "stoking tensions" on the Korean Peninsula.
The situation on the Korean Peninsula remains tense, and it is unclear whether the U.S. and South Korea will go ahead with joint military exercises.
If they do, it is likely that North Korea will respond with further provocations.
