The Bear Flag Revolt
The Bear Flag Revolt was a short-lived independence rebellion precipitated by American settlers in California's Sacramento Valley against Mexican authorities. The revolt began on June 14, 1846, when a group of American settlers captured the Mexican garrison at Sonoma. The settlers then declared California an independent republic and raised the Bear Flag, which featured a bear on a white field.
The Bear Flag Republic lasted for only 25 days. On July 9, 1846, the United States Navy arrived in Monterey and took control of the California coast. The American settlers then lowered the Bear Flag and raised the American flag. California became a U.S. territory in 1848, and a state in 1850.
