FAO and partners launch new initiative to address food loss and waste in North Africa

Cairo, Egypt, 20 March 2023 - The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) and its partners have launched a new initiative to address food loss and waste in North Africa. The initiative, which was announced at a workshop in Cairo, Egypt, will focus on developing and implementing policies and strategies to reduce food loss and waste throughout the region.
Mohamed Amrani, FAO Subregional Coordinator for North Africa, said that the initiative is a key component of FAO's efforts to promote sustainable food systems in the region. "Food loss and waste is a major problem in North Africa, and it has a significant impact on food security, the environment, and the economy," he said. "This initiative will bring together a wide range of stakeholders to develop and implement innovative solutions to this problem."
The initiative is being implemented in partnership with the governments of Egypt, Morocco, Tunisia, Algeria, Libya, and Mauritania. The partners will work together to develop a regional strategy for reducing food loss and waste, and they will also implement a number of pilot projects to demonstrate the effectiveness of different approaches to reducing food loss and waste.
The initiative is expected to have a significant impact on food security in North Africa. By reducing food loss and waste, the initiative will help to ensure that more food is available for consumption, and it will also reduce the environmental impact of food production.
